Stop. Wake up. End the fantasies and visions and dreams for a moment and let’s drop back down to reality with a bang and review what it’s really like being an entrepreneur. Believe me – in any enterprising venture or endeavour, a reality check is the key to becoming successful.
Let’s start with entrepreneurship in itself. When we think about well-known entrepreneurs, we are blinded by their monetary assets and desirable lifestyles, easily forgetting that these things are a product of years of hard-work, determination and dedication. Although, I don’t think we forget these things but I do believe that a larger amount of emphasis is placed upon the results of entrepreneurship rather than the process itself, which can certainly be pretty misleading.
Being an entrepreneurship isn’t simply a career, it’s a lifestyle choice too, so it’s imperative to know everything you can about the role before you leave your day job to embark upon a new business venture. Here are 5 things people DON’T tell you about being an entrepreneur before you make that big decisions.
IT TAKES YEARS OF HARD WORK TO BUILD A BUSINESS
That’s right. Not days, or months – years. Conventional wisdom generally suggests that modern- day entrepreneurs have extremely flexible working hours and a lot more free time. Reality? It’s probably the polar opposite. Entrepreneurs are motivated to achieve their goals, so before they do, they work extremely hard to build their business. This certainly doesn’t mean 9-5, more like the minute they wake up ’til the minute they go to bed! Don’t get me wrong, running your own business is extremely rewarding but only because of the amount of effort and endeavour you dedicate to your dream.
PASSION ISN’T ENOUGH
As an entrepreneur, you’re naturally going to find yourself a lot more motivated than those around you, but in reality it is that the passion for your business alone isn’t simply wont cut the mustard. Don’t get me wrong, in most instances passion does prevail but only to a certain point: entrepreneurial success comprises of a whole bunch of other traits additional to passion, such as resilience, tenacity and endurance.
TO MANAGE OTHERS, YOU MUST MANAGE YOURSELF
There is a definite difference between being a great boss and being a great leader within a business, whether its made up of 1 employee or 1,000 employees, great leadership falls at the forefront of the company’s success. Management and leadership skills start to bottom, being the ability to self-manage. If you cant manage yourself effectively then the reality is, you probably won’t be able to manage others well either so always be sure to be brushing up on those leadership skills!
YOU MAY NOT BECOME MASSIVELY RICH
Don’t get me wrong, if you work hard and smart to make your business profitable, the chances are it probably will be. However, popular belief leads most people to assume that if you’re an entrepreneur with a successful business, you’ll become ridiculously rich. This is not the case. Of course, if things go to plan you’ll find yourself with an abundance of rewards but exponential wealth may not be one of them.
DON'T BE DISHEARTENED BY ANY OF THIS, IN FACT, YOU SHOULD FEEL GOOD THAT THE MAIN THING PEOPLE DON'T TELL YOUT ABOUT ENTREPRENEURSHIP HAVE JUST BEEN HANDED TO YOU ON A PLATE. NOW, YOU'RE PREPARED WITH BOTH DREAMS AND REALITIES, WHICH WILL WORK TOGETHER BOTH DREAMS AS A DRIVING FORCE TO ENABLE YOU TO ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS.
